Appliqué Costume as a Medium of Symbol Communication: A Case Study of Agbo Remireke Masquerade of Agbowa-Ikosi. Journal Dress and Textiles. 1(1):28-34.
AbstractThis paper examined the unique qualities of Agbo Remireke masquerade’s costume as a medium of symbol communication among the coastal Ijebu people of Agbowa-Ikosi. The study is limited to the appliqued textile costume of the masquerade only, leaving out the wooden headdresses. Symbol representation on six (6) appliqued textile costume of the masquerade were carefully selected and analysed, three each from the three quarters (Itun Agbowa, Itun Aledo and Itun Oriwu) that make up the Agbowa-Ikosi town. Conclusively, the paper underscored the socio-cultural significance of Agbo Remireke masquerade’s appliqued costume as a medium of symbol communication among the people in contemporary time.
