Screening donors has practically eliminated viral pathogens in blood for transfusion; however, transfusion-associated bacterial sepsis remains an important health-care concern. Currently, it is the most frequently reported cause of transfusion-related fatality from infection. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence and type of bacterial contamination in donor blood and/or blood products, in a semi-urban university teaching hospital in Nigeria.

Background: The Doppler Resistive Index (RI)measures intrarenal arterial resistance. It is
increased in a number of kidney diseases and
considered a marker of renal function, which could
serve as an early radiologic predictor of
renovascular changes in sickle cell disease (SCD).
Aims and Objective:
This study evaluated selected biochemical markers
of renal functionand renal Doppler RI in a cohort of
Nigerian adults with SCD and Hb AA controls.
Materials and Methods:
Forty-four Hb SS patients in steady state (M:F =
1.2:1; median age is 24.5) and 22 Hb AA age and
sex-matched controls were recruited consecutively
into the study. All had serum biochemical tests
including serum cystatin-C, serum kidney injury
molecule-1 and serum creatinine while urinary
albumin-creatinine ratio was also evaluated. The
right renal artery Doppler RI was also evaluated in
the segmental/interlobar arteries while relevant nonparametric
tests were used to compare the
biochemical and Doppler parameters between the
subjects and the controls.
Serum creatinine ranged from subnormal to mildly
elevated levels in patients with Hb SS (33-
245μmol/l) and the median (range) renal arterial
Doppler RI was 0.70 (0.49-0.81). The other
parameters evaluated were significantly higher in
patients relative to the controls. Of the biochemical
parameters, urinary albumin- creatinine ratio
showed a weak but statistically significant positive
correlation with renal arterial Doppler RI (r=0.329; p=
0.029), while serum cystatin-C and kidney injury
molecule-1 had no correlation (r = 0.152 and 0.188
respectively; p = 0.324 and 0.22).
Renal arterial Doppler Resistivity Index has a linear
relationship with urinary albumin-creatinine ratio and
could therefore be a potential marker of early renal
impairment in patients with SCD.

The study investigated the nature of classroom misbehaviours among secondary school students in Ondo State, Nigeria. It also determined the effectiveness of the teachers and the strategies adopted by the teachers to manage classroom misbehaviours. Furthermore, it established the relationship between teachers’ effectiveness and man-agement of classroom misbehavior with a view to maintaining discipline in schools. The study adopted descrip-tive survey design. The population comprised the teachers and school administrators in Ondo State. The sample consisted of 420 teachers and 180 school administrators selected randomly from 10 secondary schools selected by stratified sampling technique using location of schools and ownerships of schools as strata. Two instruments namely “Questionnaire on Management of Classroom Misbehaviour” (QMCM) and “Teacher Effectiveness Scale” (TES) were used to elicit information from the students. QMCM was made up of three sections. Section A consisted of items on socio-demographic variables such as sex, location of schools and ownership of schools. Section B requested the teachers to indicate the types of misbehavior that take place in the classroom and their frequencies of occurrence. Section C comprises strategies used by teachers to manage classroom misbehaviours. TES was the ratings of teachers’ effectiveness as done by the school administrators. Results showed that the fol-lowing misbehaviours occurred frequently in the classrooms: talking while was teaching (75.4%) and fighting (90.9%). The strategies adopted by teachers included giving advice (90.5) and referring the students to the school counsellors (88.6%). The teachers were rated effective in attending classes punctually (81.3%) and in communicating clearly with the students (96.0%). Furthermore, there existed a significant relationship between teachers’ effectiveness and management of classroom misbehavior, r = 0.0525 which is significant at .05 level.

The existence of riparian vegetation is greatly threatened by change in land uses in Nigeria and information on historical management of land use which influences riparian vegetation dynamics is critical to the conservation of plants species diversity. This information is poorly understood especially in Nigeria and by extension in Africa. This study therefore assessed the areas covered by riparian forests in Osun State, Nigeria in order to identify the main drivers of its decline using optical remote sensing data. It also assessed the availability and distribution of the riparian forests over three decades (1986-2016) using Landsat Enhanced Thematic Mapper (ETM). Results showed that the riparian forests covered 546.18km² (6.40%) with about 308riparian forests distributed across the state in 1986 but had declined to 176 by 2016. Three decades later, areas covered by riparian forests decreased to171.69km² (2.01%), representing a decline of about 69% and was predicted a rapid transition to disturbed lands. Human activities such as logging, farming, grazing and construction have greatly influenced the riparian vegetation cover with obvious decline in extent, distribution and quality. Observation from our case study showed that the disappearance of these forests is taken place at a rate that is faster than the predicted level of the Nigerian riparian forest loss by 2040. Notably deforestation, agriculture and urbanization are the main drivers of this decline, of the African gallery forests.

The limited access to oral health care in developing countries can be greatly improved by integrating oral health into the Primary Health Care (PHC) system. This study was designed to assess the views of PHC workers on integrating oral health care into the PHC system. A self-administered questionnaire sur- vey was conducted in two selected local govern- ment areas of Lagos State. The instrument contained three sections assessing socio- demographic features, knowledge of common oral diseases and views on integration of oral health into PHC respectively. The mean knowl- edge score was 7.75 (SD=±1.81), while 60.4% of the respondents had average knowledge scores. Educational status (P=0.018) and des- ignation (P=0.033) were significantly related to the mean knowledge scores. There was no significant difference in the oral health knowl- edge of the various cadres (P=0.393). Majority (85.4%) of the respondents were willing to include oral health education in their job schedule and 82% believed they needed more training on oral health. The knowledge of the respondents on the causes of the common oral diseases was deficient. Oral health education should be included in the future curriculum of these personnel.

A structured questionnaire was administered on 495 women (urban 339, rural 156) from two LGAs of Borno State, Nigeria, using the interviewer method. The age range of the subjects was 12 to 80 years with a mean age (+/- SD) of 35.7 +/- 13.44 years. Majority (83.5%) did not have any formal education. Oral hygiene tools used by the respondents included toothbrush/paste 36 (7.9%), chewing stick 250 (54.9%), charcoal 159 (34.9%) and ordinary water 10 (2.2%). Of those using chewing sticks; 168 (67.2%) use Salvadora persica, 36 (14.4%) use Azadirachta indica and 46 (18.4%) use Eucalyptus camaldulensis. Forty (8.1%) of the respondents do not clean their teeth at all. Strong association was found between choice of teeth cleaning material and educational level (P=0.000). Three hundred and one (60.8%) of the respondents stain their teeth with flowers of Solanum incanum or Nicotania tabacum while, 218 (44.0%) perform tattooing of lip or gingivae and of this number 213 (97.7%) performed tattooing before marriage. Tattooing is usually performed without local anaesthesia with thorns of Balanites aegyptiaca and a mixture of charcoal & seeds of Acacia nilotica var. tomentosa as pigments. It is concluded that traditional oral health practices still constitute important part of the lifestyle in the study population.

A low-cost technique, electrochemical deposition has been used to grow nanocrystalline quaternary Cu–Zn–Sn–S (CZTS) on indium tin oxide (ITO)-coated glass substrate. Effects of variations in deposition potentials and sulphur content on the chemical composition, optical, morphological, structural and electrical properties of the deposited films have been investigated. The morphologies showed and confirmed the results from XRD analysis that the films are of polycrystalline grains. Average interplanar spacing of the films is 3.376 Å. The average film’s thickness as estimated from Rutherford back-scattered spectroscopy studies was 34 nm. The estimated stoichiometry was found to be that of Cu2ZnSnS4 tetragonal kesterite structure. Optical studies showed that the absorption characteristic of the deposited CZTS film across the wavelength region is significantly dependent on growth deposition potentials and electrolyte concentration. Estimated band gap is between 1.75 and 1.81 eV. The electrical studies showed that the deposited films exhibit ohmic characteristics. This study demonstrated successful deposition of tetragonal kesterite structures of CZTS using a two-electrode cell approach. It also revealed the novel route of growing CZTS thin film over the conventional three electrode cells.

Thin films of copper zinc tin sulphide (CZTS) have been deposited on glass substrate at various solution concentration and angular speed using sol-gel spin coating technique. Surface morphology showed that the deposited layers are continuous and pinhole free. The film's particles are evenly distributed and adhered firmly to the substrates. X-ray diffraction studies revealed that the films are polycrystalline with tetragonal kesterite structure. Interplanar spacing and average crystallite size were estimated as 3.732 Å and 56.53 nm. Film's thickness and stoichiometry were determined from Rutherford Backscattering Spectroscopy (RBS) as127 nm and Cu 1.5 Zn 1.0 Sn 1.1 S 4.4 O 3.3. Optical studies showed that the deposited films exhibit direct band transition. The values of the energy gap were found between 1.30 and 1.60 eV. The result of the study suggested that the deposited CZTS thin films can perform as a good absorber material in nanostructured optoelectronic devices.
