EXPERIENCE AT THE COLLEGE LEVEL

  1. Provost, College of Health Sciences, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Nigeria. 2007-2009.

Notable achievements in office as Provost include:

  • Regular review and promotion of qualified staff, and adequate attention to other welfare matters affecting staff and students.
  • Regular Departmental and Faculty Conferences, Workshops and Seminars.
  • Extensive review of the Curricula for Medicine, Dentistry, Medical Rehabilitation and Nursing.
  • Significant improvement in transport facilities for staff and students of the College. A group of Alumni students in the USA donated a 30-seater Toyota Coaster bus to the College in May 2008. The College was able to purchase a brand new Toyota Corolla 2.0 car. We also got an allocation of a 14-seater Toyota bus from Central Administration, through the Vice Chancellor’s Office, for the Anatomy Department. Some of the old buses were also refurbished and put to use for the conveyance of our students.
  • Working with the Vice Chancellor and the Management Board of the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospitals Complex to ensure commencement of the relocation of the Dental hospital, from campus to Ife Hospital Unit (where it rightly belongs). The construction of the new Dental hospital building is in progress.
  • Initiation, launching and Foundation laying of a 500-seater ultra-modern Lecture Theatre and Office Complex at the Ife hospital Unit. All academic staff of the College supported the project and made personal donations. The project was taken over under the Tertiary Education Trust Fund 3 billion Naira project and was completed in 2015.
  • Streamlining admission into the Medical programmes in line with the directives of the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria. This was achieved through the support of the Central Administration and other arms of the University. This accomplishment has ensured the continued accreditation of our medical programmes, thereby averting the embarrassment faced by many other institutions that were disaccredited.
  • Internationalization of programmes in the College. The College received many international visitors and scholars. Faculties, Departments and Units held conferences and Workshops which attracted international visitors and donors. Also, 20 students were sent to the College by the Lesotho government. Unfortunately, many of them left during the protracted national strike in Nigerian Universities in 2009. Two of these Lesotho students graduated as doctors in 2015. The experience was relevant and useful in formulating a protocol for the recruitment of foreign students.
  • Renovating and equipping the College library to serve as an Electronic library. The students of the College through their different Associations made notable and voluntary financial and other contributions to the project.
  • Extensive renovation of the Provost Office, the College Board room, the College Administrative Offices, the Drivers office and the Security Office.
  • Introduction of the Provost Cup as an inter-programme football competition for students at all levels in the college.
  • Active participation and contribution to the activities of the National Association of Colleges of Medicine (NACOM).
  • Finding a permanent solution to the perennial electricity problem in the College of Health Sciences which was intractable for over 20 years.
  • Working closely with the Central University Administration, and ensuring peace, friendliness, cooperation, effective coordination and unprecedented progress in the College.
